Private Residence at Khandala

A second home for a Bombay-based family, the project brief from the client was to create a modern residence that maximized the views on the beautiful and idyllic site at Khandala while creating a safe environment that the family could retreat to every time they needed a break from the hectic lifestyle in Bombay.

The initial concept diagrams for the house were designed around a protective wall that wraps around the functions that make up it’s different spaces. Program-wise, the brief was divided to create three different homes to accommodate the three different sections of the family that would occupy the house at different times in such a way that each family would get it’s own independent space while having access to the heart of the house at all times. This was done to ensure that the house was sustainable with respect to energy usage and maintenance.

Spatially, the house steps down from the entry porch and each home is located at a different level on either side of a central axis with the main home at the highest level having the best views across the valley.

The intent with this project was to create a sense of place, a sanctuary that provides shelter and calm to a mind weary of the city.
