A 1200 sft. South Bombay apartment with a typical layout, this residential interior project came with a challenging brief of creating space out of nothing. We were asked to imagine rooms where there are none to begin with.

The apartment was a two-bedroom unit with a long and linear living and dining space. A family with growing children, the brief was to carve out extra bedroom spaces for the two teenage children who had been sharing bedroom and storage space with the grandparents. Being teenagers, they also needed spaces that they could identify with and where they would be comfortable bringing their friends to.

In order to create the extra space, we divided the linear living space into a sufficiently sized living and dining space and a small cozy bedroom for the teenage daughter with her own wardrobe, fold up study space and a fold out sofa bed. The existing haphazard seating arrangement in the living space was re-organized into a more cohesive setting centered on the television. The teenage son got his own bedroom out of the previously used utility space, which now contains his study space, bed with storage and a display space. The bedrooms for the parents and the grandparents were refurbished to make the existing layout larger and maximize the space allocation and usage.

An apartment that started with two bedrooms now was a four bedroom apartment with each occupant reclaiming their privacy and identity. The color palette was minimal and light with colors and materials that helped accentuate the apartment’s access to natural light, cross ventilation and great views over the bay of Bombay.
