   ARKxSITE Competition

The idyllic site for the visitor’s center for the Cromeleque dos Almendres is located on a low slope with the Neolithic stones occupying one end of the slope. The site overlooks the modern city of Evora on the other end of the slope and forms a metaphorical bridge between the old and the new. Our design proposal for the visitor’s center for the Cromeleque dos Almendres focuses on heightening the experience for the visitor across this metaphorical bridge of time.

The conceptual design for the Visitor’s center for the Cromeleque dos Almendres is centered on the idea of the “journey.” A journey one makes to reach the site to visit the stones and the journey that the stones themselves have made through centuries of their existence. The design for this center attempts to recreate for the visitor an experience of walking through the stones in leisure while taking in the sights of the city.

The project finds its genesis within the site itself and makes an effort to tie the modern city of Evora to its Neolithic past whilst never allowing the visitor to lose sight of the present.
